Initially only intended as a platform for befriended bands and artists, the label developed a life of its own.
The first song was Dubstep Killed Rock 'n' Roll by Ephixa, the first sampler was released on Jwith seven songs by the artists Feint, Halo Nova (today: Varien), Stephen Walking, Ephixa, Neilio, Arion and Going Quantum.
Darlington and Paunonen started a series of samplers to give artists both a chance to publish and to minimize competition among artists. In July 2011 Mike Darlington and Ari Paunonen launched Monstercat as a YouTube channel. A new sampler is released about every 40 songs or every three to four months.
In addition, on Wednesdays appears podcast on. The label releases new songs every Monday and Thursday (Monstercat: Uncaged) and every Tuesday and Friday (Monstercat: Instinct). The main business of the label, however, is the different samplers. The artists' publications appear on their own website, iTunes, Xbox Music, Spotify, Deezer, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Google Play Music, Apple Music and Beatport, among others.
Bootleging and unauthorized remixing are no problem for the label. Instead, encourage people to share and remix music. Together with the compilation Monstercat 018 - Frontier (August 6, 2014) the “Monstercat Manifesto” was published in which the label declares that they consider the old copyrights to be antiquated and outdated. The artist retains complete control over the copyright and may offer the published songs to other labels. It mostly brings out digital publications and is increasingly focused on streaming music. Monstercat is not a classical music label. 3.2 EPs (Extended Play) and LPs (Long Play).The two created compilation albums to provide artists with a method of releasing their music and to lessen the competitiveness between them. Monstercat's first compilation album, Launch Week featured seven artists: Feint, Halo Nova (now known as Varien), Stephen Walking, Ephixa, Neilio, Arion, and Going Quantum.ĭuring the first few months of 2014, Monstercat partnered with the electric family in aid of the Humane Society of Canada. In December 2014, Monstercat launched a 24-hour digital radio station, hosted on Twitch and YouTube. To this day, Monstercat continues to release compilation albums containing thirty songs and two mixes each. In July 2011, James Leusink, Mike Darlington, Monstercat's current CEO, and Ari Paunonen, Monstercat's current COO, created the Monstercat YouTube channel as a medium for their friends to promote themselves and to share their music with each other. Monstercat follows a release schedule, where new music is published three times a week, in addition to an hour-long podcast, which is streamed every Tuesday on Twitch, Beam, and YouTube. After Monstercat released a series of thirty tracks, the new album collection created contains these tracks and two continuous mix album. The label signs artists on a non-exclusive single-track basis, allowing artists to move freely between other labels and brands.
